Ballynahinch couple enjoy 65th wedding anniversary

A BALLYNAHINCH couple have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Billy and Maisie Shaw were married in Edengrove Presbyterian Church on August 20, 1960.

The couple met at a Saturday dance in the town’s Orange Hall.

Both 89, they have lived n Ballynahinch since they got married and Maisie celebrates her 90th birthday next month. 

Billy, who is originally from Saintfield, was a keen sportsman and a past president of Ardglass Golf Club. He was also a member of Cahard Flute Band for 75 years.

He worked at Mackie’s in Belfast and has been retired for 30 years.

Maisie worked at Sawer’s food shop in Belfast and as a crossing patrolwoman at Assumption Grammar School before she retired 24 years ago.

The couple have travelled extensively, including to Spain,Canada, Russia and the United States.

Their milestone anniversary was celebrated with a meal at Temple Golf Club along with Maisie’s sister, Lyle McClenaghan, nephew Colin and their spouses, Hugh and Lynne.

Asked about the secret for their long and happy marriage, Maisie said: “We’ve just been very happy all our lives.”
