Backing up the HACK

21 August 2013

VIKKI Methven will probably be a very welcome face to hundreds of hill walkers next month. The former Newcastle Primary School teacher will be one of the volunteers manning the final checkpoint providing, tea, buns and much needed encouragement to the walkers taking part in the Mournes HACK, the tough annual fundraising event organised by the NSPCC.

The HACK is one of the charity’s major Northern Ireland fundraising events, inviting walkers to raise money by taking part in one of two tough walks in the Mournes. For those fit people who like a challenge there is a 20 mile route while the less energetic can take part in a 14 mile walk.

The walks will take place on Saturday, September 14, and as well as the walkers a host of volunteers will be mobilised providing support and assistance to the walkers.

Vikki is a member of the charity’s Newcastle fundraising committee whose members will by manning the final checkpoint the third time.

“It can be wet and windy but we know how much the walkers appreciate us being there and volunteering with the rest of the committee really helps keep me going,” said Vikki.

“It’s a big highlight for me when the walkers come and give us such lovely comments, we are always told that the hospitality we have provided for them is really appreciated.

“Most importantly, the craic is always mighty and we all return home tired but energised to try to do more to help children who aren’t as fortunate as us.

“Volunteering for the HACK gives me an enormous sense of satisfaction. It is a great way of helping the NSPCC and showing how much we appreciate the efforts of all the walkers who are prepared to give up a Saturday to help raise money for the benefit of our children,” she said.

The charity is hoping more volunteers will come forward to help with the event. It could be registering entrants on the morning of the walk, manning a check point, keeping an eye on walkers as they make their way around the course, handing out drinks and refreshments, marshalling  and many other tasks. And there are always volunteers needed to help with the much needed barbecue at the end of the walk.

NSPCC community fundraising manager Fionnuala Savage said: “We are so grateful to Vikki and the committee in Newcastle for volunteering again at this year’s HACK.

“We would love to hear from anyone is who interested in helping out with this year’s challenge. Our volunteers make such a big difference and get so much satisfaction from helping at the event.

Most importantly, you’ll also be supporting us to raise much needed funds so we can continue to deliver NSPCC services across Northern Ireland,” she said.
