Army blow up WW2 bomb discovered by walker at Murlough

4 May 2016

ARMY bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion on a world war two mortar bomb discovered on Murlough beach on Sunday.

The bomb was discovered close to a public footpath on the northern end of the beach which was sealed off by members of Newcastle Coastguard team.

The discovery is the latest in a series of ordnance finds on local beaches with many believed to have been washed ashore from a giant arms dump in a deep water trench in the Irish Sea.

It is also believed that some may have been left over from Murlough Nature Reserve’s previous life as a training base for elements of the American army before D-Day.

The Coastguard is asking anyone who discovers anything suspicious on local beaches to immediately telephone 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
