Appeal for urgent resort repair work

Appeal for urgent resort repair work

23 July 2025

AN appeal has been issued to a leading government department to carry out urgent repairs to chain-linked fencing and concrete posts at the Widows Row at Newcastle’s South Promenade.

Mournes councillor, Willie Clarke, has written to Department for Infrastructure roads officials asking for the work to be carried out.

He said the current condition of the chain-link fencing and its crumbling concrete posts is not only unsightly, but also contributing to a reduction in already limited parking availability in the area.

“Residents and visitors alike have raised serious concerns about the visual impact of the fence, which has become unfit for purpose,” said Cllr Clarke.

“In addition, the poor state of the fencing encroaches into potential parking spaces, creating unnecessary inconvenience for residents and deterring tourists.”

Cllr Clarke said the Widows Row and South Promenade is a popular and picturesque part of Newcastle and it’s “unacceptable” that such a key location is being blighted by neglect.

He added: “I am urging DfI Roads to prioritise these essential repairs and ensure the area is restored to a safe, accessible and visually appropriate condition.”
