JACK Hood’s Captain’s Day at Spa was accorded what must be the ultimate tribute last week when he was presented with the Irish international blazer proudly owned by former member Anne Ferguson.

The Spa golfing star, still fondly remembered at the club, represented Ireland for two seasons and during a remarkable career won countless trophies, titles, medals and other accolades.

Her green blazer was presented to Jack last Thursday night at a pre-Captain’s Day dinner in the clubhouse by her brother, John, who said Anne still regarded Spa as her home club and the place of her happiest golfing memories.

The Spa captain said he was “absolutely honoured and delighted” to accept the blazer on behalf of the club and asked John to convey the thanks of all Spa members to his sister for such a wonderful and thoughtful gift.

“This very special blazer will be given a permanent and prominent place of honour within Spa Golf Club,” Jack said.

Anne, who now lives in Swindon and continues to play off a handicap of five, began her golfing career at the age of 10 and two years later won the first ever junior competition at Spa, beating her brother in the process. “That still rankles,” John joked last week.

Her impressive golfing CV includes Ulster and Irish girls’ titles and a semi-finalist’s medal in the Senior Irish Ladies’ Championship.

She continues to play golf at county level in England and is also a county selector.

A full report and pictures of Spa’s Captain’s Day will be published in next week’s Recorder.
