A BALLYNAHINCH schoolgirl is celebrating after being named as a winner of the 2018 Arts & Minds competition organised by NASUWT teachers’ union.

Arts & Minds is an annual, UK-wide competition aimed at promoting race equality and diversity in schools.

Anna Kelly, who was a Year 10 pupil at Assumption Grammar School when the competition was judged before the summer holidays, was chosen as a winner of the secondary school artwork category for her piece, ‘The Story behind the Scandal’, looking at the theme of Windrush.

Anna picked up her prize at the national awards ceremony in London.

The judges said of Anna’s artwork: “The use of current newspapers cuttings is very effective in creating the image and the colour and texture add to the piece.”

Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said: “Congratulations to Anna, who clearly worked very hard to achieve this success.”
