Anger over speeding in Annacloy

7 March 2012

RESIDENTS at the Annacloy Road outside Downpatrick have expressed concern about the speed of vehicles in the area.

People who live in the townland of Dunannelly say they are “frightened” to drive out onto the main road and are particularly concerned at the speed of cars heading towards Downpatrick.

One concerned resident has contacted councillor Terry Andrews following a serious accident in the area recently and he has raised the matter with the Roads Service.

“The speed of vehicles along this particular stretch of road is a major concern,” said the councillor.

“This section of the road was significantly upgraded a number of years ago and is now a temptation for some drivers to travel at high speed.”

Councillor Andrews said it’s important the views of residents who live off the main road are addressed and steps taken to improve road safety.

He also confirmed the Roads Service met recently on site with a representative from the PSNI’s traffic management division to discuss the concerns highlighted by residents.

Councillor Andrews said as a result an existing hazard warning line is to be extended by some 400 metres with the work scheduled to be completed before the end of the current financial year, provided the necessary money can be found.

The Rowallane councillor said the Roads Service has also placed a vehicle data classifier at the Annacloy Road to measure the speed of traffic and intends to forward the collected data to the PSNI.

He added: “I welcome the prompt response of both the Roads Service and PSNI and would appeal to drivers who use this particular road to slow down.”
