THE newly formed Donard Fundraising Group for Marie Curie has raised £17,500 to enable the charity to pay for 875 hours of palliative nursing care.

The group raised the money when they held their first fundraising Power Of An Hour fun, run, walk or cycle for Marie Curie in Dundrum last Saturday.

Donard Fundraising Group Chairman Paul Madden said the group has been overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of the public towards the event.

“We are so grateful for each and every single donation made by the public and all of the local businesses whom we have approached, who all gave so willingly towards our inaugural Power Of An Hour event,” said Paul.

“We are stunned that the five of us in our small fundraising group have been able to help Marie Curie, help anyone in our local area suffering from cancer or a terminal illness, receive some of those 875 vital and dignified hours of palliative nursing care at a difficult time when they need it the most,” he said.

One of the donations received by the group when the event was over was for £1,000 from Dundrum Community Development Association.

The Group’s PR/Press Officer Jacqui Mason said the successful concept of giving up an hour or so of your time, to help fund a vital hour of Marie Curie Nursing Care, seems to have captured the imagination and generosity of heart of all our entrants and donors.

“We pulled out all the stops in order to give everyone who took part a fantastic goodie bag.

“We ended ‘our giving back ethos’ and event with a free grand prize draw for all adult entrants, where over £1,000 worth of prizes were gladly given away as a very special and heartfelt thank you from our Donard Fundraising Group for taking part in our event,” she said.
