All set for gala event

3 December 2014

IT’S now less than two weeks to go before Downpatrick Lions Club’s gala Christmas concert.

The excitement level for Downpatrick Primary School’s choir, who will be performing, can only be described as incredibly high as they have been rehearsing at every available opportunity.

During the concert, which takes place in St. Patrick’s Grammar School, on Friday, December 12, Downpatrick Lions will be taking the opportunity to celebrate local heroes.

Lions president Tom Briggs said: “We felt we would like to bring those organisations supported by our club, who work selflessly and tirelessly for our community, into the spotlight.

“It will be a great opportunity to find out where all the money we collect from street collections and fundraising events actually goes.”

Two organisations, both actively engaged in youth work will be the main beneficiaries this year.

Youth Initiatives Downpatrick are looking forward to expanding their street-based work with young people in the town into their brand new base just opening in Market Street.

From here they aim to provide mentoring and support services, as well as giving young people somewhere they can just in for a chat.

The other beneficiary, the Patrician Youth Centre, also works hard to provide year round support for young people.

In addition to the many and varied programmes available in the centre there is currently a cast and team of around 50 young people rehearsing for their very own production of ‘Cinderella’ in January.

MC Peter Jordan is also gearing up for the big night. “I appear to have a big job on my hands,” he said.

“The programme is absolutely packed with all sorts of things. Come and listen to the vast array of musical talent, but also be prepared to join in and have a really good laugh.”
