Ageing Kilmore bridge to be replaced by DRD

14 December 2011

KILMORE bridge is to be replaced.

The news has been confirmed by South Down MP Margaret Ritchie and welcomed by Rowallane councillor Maria McCarthy.

Miss Ritchie, who has been lobbying the Department for Regional Development (DRD) for the ageing bridge to be replaced, said significant progress has been made.

The MP said it is her understanding the Roads Service has progressed the design of a replacement bridge and is currently investigating issues surrounding the acquisition of the required land.

“This will allow both the installation of any temporary works and the construction of the replacement bridge,” said Miss Ritchie.

The MP said she also raised the Kilmore bridge issue with Stormont roads minister Danny Kennedy, expressing her concern that Translink buses fitted with disabled access equipment can’t use the bridge.

She continued: “I have been assured by Mr. Kennedy that the difficulties experienced by Translink and service users in the rural areas of Crossgar, Kilmore and Annacloy will be considered in the prioritisation process for a new bridge.”

Councillor McCarthy said it’s important funding is allocated by the DRD to ensure the bridge replacement scheme progresses.

“Many residents living in the area are deeply concerned about the stability of the existing bridge, particularly with regards to the enforcement of the 10 tonne weight restriction,” she said.

“I will continue to make representations to the Roads Service about these matters. Nevertheless, I welcome the news that the Department has taken positive steps towards the replacement of Kilmore bridge.”
