100 years for Jack

100 years for Jack

9 October 2013

JACK Hanna, a quiet farmer and devoted uncle, celebrated his 100th birthday this week. On October 4, 1913, Jack was born in the townland of Upper Crossgare outside Dromara.

Until recently he lived with his brother and sister-in-law at Clintnagooland, near Ballynahinch, before moving to Spa Nursing Home.

One of five brothers, Jack attended Burren Primary School before taking to the land. He never married but became a proud uncle to his many nephews and nieces.

At a 100th birthday party at Spa Nursing Home to mark the occasion, one of his nieces, Pauline Johnston, explained that Jack was very close to his brother Bertie, who he helped on the farm.

Pauline said he also became like a “second father” to her and her siblings.

“He is a quiet man with a real sense of humour,” she said. “At times he likes to be heard.”

Pauline said Jack’s religious faith had been a very important part of his life.

“Jack attended Dromara Presbyterian Church, which was important to him all his life and he is still a member,” she said.

Marking that importance, the Very Rev. Jon Dixon, former Presbyterian Church Moderator was in attendance, along with the Rev. Kenny Hanna from 2nd Dromara Presbyterian Church.

And of particular importance among the family members helping Jack celebrate on Friday was his sister-in-law Evelyn.

“She looked after him well all her married life,” said Pauline. “He thinks the world of her.”

Clutching his telegram from the Queen, which he said he was delighted to receive, Jack said he “couldn’t believe” the number of people who had come to help him celebrate.

In party mood, he was happy to recite a favourite poem ‘The Cuckoo is a Pretty Bird’ and sing ‘Mary Jane Walker of Dromara town’ to those gathered.

His memory for bible verse learnt at school still intact, Jack also recited the 23rd Psalm and Isaiah 53 for his listeners.

Jack confirmed that his faith had played a big part in his life. “Far more than I deserve,” he said.

His theory on what is required for a long life is also simple one.

“Plenty of hard work,” he said.
