A PROTEST demonstration against on the ongoing violence in Palestine was held in Newcastle  Saturday.

Large crowds gathered to call for an immediate end to the violence, which has recently been described as genocide by the UN Commission of Inquiry.

The protest was organised by the Mourne for Palestine group, which was formed by local residents in support of the Palestinian people and to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The event drew a substantial turnout from across the district with banners, chants and speeches reverberating throughout the town.

Among the speakers were legal advocates, representatives from BDS Belfast and young Palestinians now living in Ireland after fleeing the conflict.

A spokesperson for Mourne for Palestine said all of the speakers were united in their message that local and national leaders must take immediate action to address the ongoing violence and suffering in Palestine.

“People here feel deeply about what’s happening in Palestine,” the spokesperson continued.

“These marches are our way of showing that we will not turn a blind eye and that we expect our representatives to take a strong stand for peace and justice.”

The spokesperson added: “The growing turnout reflects a widespread desire among ordinary people to stand up for human rights and peace.”

The next solidarity march, organised by Friends of Palestine Downpatrick, will take place this Saturday at 12pm in St Patrick’s Square, Downpatrick.
