Work starts on upgrade of busy Downpatrick junction

14 August 2024

WORK has started on the eagerly-awaited upgrade of the busy Edward Street/Ardglass Road junction in Downpatrick.

Department for Infrastructure contractors are due on site imminently with their arrival welcomed by South Down MLA Cathy Mason and Downpatrick councillor Oonagh Hanlon.

As part of the junction upgrade, a new footpath will be provided linking the Ardglass Road with Edward Street.

Mrs Mason said the improvements reflect Sinn Féin’s ongoing commitment to making Downpatrick a better place to live, work and visit.

And she has thanked local people for their patience and support ahead of work getting underway on the scheme.

Cllr Hanlon said the junction improvement “marks a significant step forward” in enhancing safety and accessibility for all residents after a long campaign to ensure the junction was upgraded.

She added: “The improvement scheme will help ease traffic flow and reduce congestion, making daily commutes smoother and safer for everyone.

“The new footpath is also a vital addition, providing pedestrians with a secure and convenient route, especially for families, children, and those with mobility issues.”
