Westmeath gold for Kerry

NEWCASTLE ‘S Kerry O’Flaherty was celebrating a fantastic victory at the Irish Indoor Championships at the weekend.

The Commonwealth Games runner won the 1500m title in thrilling fashion at the Athlone International Arena in Westmeath on Sunday.

Just metres from the finish her nearest challenger, Dublin’s Claire Tarplee, stumbled and fell as O’Flaherty put her under intense  pressure.

Earlier O’Flaherty had taken the brave move of leading from the front. Tarplee took the lead with two laps to go and built up a 20-metre lead, but was unable to hold off the Newcastle runner’s surging finish.

O’Flaherty won in 4:16.49, but missed out on qualification for the European Championships. Tarplee took the bronze medal.
