DOWN Triathlon Club has announced the return of its flagship event, Beyond the Wall Triathlon, for a fourth year, in association with MG Construction.

The National Series-recognised triathlon will take place on June 22, starting at 10 am, within the National Trust’s Castle Ward Estate and surrounding area.

The event includes three disciplines over a total distance of 25.75km, with a 750m swim, a 20k cycle and a 5k run putting participants through their paces.

Competitors will swim in the waters of Strangford Lough, supported by water marshals from local sailing and rowing clubs.

After swimming, the athletes will navigate a challenging bike course, starting with a climb up Dave’s Hill, named after a former member, and riding on traffic-managed roads towards Quoile, Downpatrick, before returning via the Audleystown Road.

The final leg is a trail run through the woodland, gravel paths, and the shoreline of Castle Ward, with a dramatic finishing area in the courtyard — a film location for Winterfell in the HBO series, Game of Thrones.

Down Triathlon Club was recognised as Triathlon Ireland’s club of the year in 2023 and was shortlisted for race of the year in 2024.

The club promotes health, fitness and community spirit, offering inclusive membership and fostering a welcoming environment for athletes of all levels — benefits that chairman Michael Morrisey has highlighted.

“Down Triathlon Club is committed to providing athletes with skills and confidence to take on challenges such as, Beyond the Wall Triathlon.

“Following the success of our 12-week Come on Down and Tri Programme, our new recruits, known as ‘the ‘Hawks’, are prepared and confident to participate in this National Series race, alongside over 300 triathletes.”

Race Director Matt Whittaker stated: “I’m delighted to once again be the race director, working with a talented race committee. This race wouldn’t be possible without the support of over 170 marshals along the race route, Strangford Sailing Club, Quoile Yacht Club and Strangford Coastal Rowing Club, as well as the support of local residents and key local businesses as sponsors, including headline sponsor MG Construction.”

“We are so grateful to the support of the Newry, Mourne and Down District Council for their sports event grant, and to the National Trust for hosting us once again. We look forward to another successful, safe event alongside officials from Triathlon Ireland,” he added.

Peter Galloway, from MG Construction, added: “We are delighted to support Beyond the Wall Triathlon as headline Sponsor. Down Triathlon Club have created a community event that is recognised as a top race by Triathlon Ireland.

“It’s a great platform to show just what can be achieved if you put your mind to it! I’m looking forward to joining competitors and hope it inspires more people to get out there and try something that challenges you.”
