Vandals condemned for Newcastle pitches damage

SECURITY around a new sports pitch in Newcastle is to be beefed up following recent vandalism at the £1.2m facility.

Fencing around the 3G pitch has been broken with young people accessing the sports pitch causing a disturbance for nearby residents by playing loud music into the early hours.

Mournes councillor Laura Devlin has condemned those responsible for the damage and late night disturbances.

She said the upgraded the 3G pitch represents a “significant investment for the area” to provide a safe, modern space for young people and local clubs to enjoy.

Cllr Devlin confirmed residents in the Tullybrannigan area contacted her after a number of recent incidents, which have added to their frustration following ongoing issues with car meets in Donard Park.

“This pitch was hard fought for and has already made such a difference for local football teams and young people,” she continued. “Hearing that fences are being broken and loud music blasted into the early hours is incredibly disappointing.

“I understand the draw of a good pitch, especially during the summer evenings, but this isn’t the way to enjoy it. Breaking in and causing disruption isn’t fair on the people living nearby and risks damaging something that belongs to all of us.”

Cllr Devlin said while those responsible might think what they are doing is “harmless fun,” they are only letting themselves and their community down.

“I know many local young people who are proud of this new facility and would never dream of disrespecting it in this way,” she said.

Cllr Devlin confirmed she has contacted council officials to look at additional security measures and will continue engaging with residents and the local football club.

She added: “This is a fantastic resource. We all want to see it used well and protected. Let’s keep it something we can all be proud of.
