SOUTH Down MLA Cathy Mason has welcomed the next stage of progressing legislation at Stormont to make school uniforms more affordable.

Ms Mason was speaking after the second stage of the School Uniforms Bill passed in the Assembly.

Sinn Fein’s early years spokesperson said the legislation was an opportunity to finally “cut the costs of school uniforms and keep money in the pockets of workers and families in South Down.”

She said her party has consistently supported legislation to cut the costs of school uniforms and PE gear considerably to make a real difference to families.

“One of my first actions as an MLA for South Down was to introduce a proposal for this legislation and I am glad to see the Education Minister now progressing this,” she said.

Ms Mason said this bill must remove requirements for expensive branded items and permit the use of affordable, high street alternatives.

“I’d like to thank the many schools and community groups who annually host uniform swaps – from Newcastle and Castlewellan to Downpatrick and beyond – which really ease the burden for families,” she said.

“Workers and families across South Down, many of whom are struggling to cope with rising living costs, need to see urgent action on this issue.”

“Sinn Féin will work with all parties to ensure that this legislation is the best it can be and progress this through the Assembly as quickly as possible,” Mrs Mason added.
