A TALENTED young photographer from Shimna Integrated College in Newcastle has taken part in the prestigious National Geographic Photo Camp.
Sixth Form student Toby Coole joined other young people aged 15 to 23 for
the week-long event which based at Belfast Exposed, a leading photography gallery, providing participants with a transformative experience in visual storytelling.
Day trips included visits to the border and Belfast’s iconic peace walls, as well as other sites of historic significance.
Led by National Geographic photographers and editors, the students focused on using photography to tell personal stories that reflected their lives, perspectives, and experiences.
In addition to honing technical photography skills, the camp emphasised the power of storytelling through images. Each participant selected their best photographs and presented them to the group, explaining the story behind each image.
At the end of the camp, the students collaborated to create a video montage that combined all of their photos, providing a collective narrative of their week-long journey.
A spokesperson for Shimna College said: “Through this experience, Toby had the chance to work closely with some of the world’s most esteemed photographers, gaining insight into the power of images to spark dialogue and foster understanding.
“The programme fostered creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork, equipping students with tools for effective storytelling.
“Shimna Integrated College is delighted that Toby represented the school at this prestigious event.”
