Temple roundabout plan backed

ROADS Service officials have been asked to bring forward a scheme for a new roundabout at the notoriously busy Temple crossroads.

The request by Stormont Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy comes after he recently met on site with Strangford Assemblyman Mike Nesbitt and Rowallane councillor Robert Burgess.

There have been a number of accidents at the busy staggered crossroads which is used by thousands of motorists each week making their way to Lisburn and Carryduff from Down District.

Politicians believe there is sufficient land to allow a roundabout to be provided at the crossroads and are delighted Mr. Kennedy has asked his officials to bring such a scheme forward.

Mr. Nesbitt said the Regional Development Minister has asked for the project to be brought forward as “quickly as possible.”

He continued: “I recently met with Minister Kennedy at Temple crossroads so he could see for himself how the junction is in much need of improvement to make it safer for road users.

“The Minister pledged at the time that he would discuss the options for improving safety with his officials without delay and I am delighted he has now moved so quickly to set the wheels in motion.”

Councillor Burgess explained there are long tailbacks in the evening for drivers heading to the Temple crossroads from both the Saintfield and Lisburn directions.

He said one of the big issues is the speed of vehicles approaching the staggered crossroads from Ballynahinch and Carryduff, explaining the problem is particularly acute at peak periods.

Councillor Burgess added: “The crossroads need to be replaced with a roundabout to improve traffic flow and reduce the speed of vehicles.
