SUSPENDED Newry, Mourne and Down councillor Billy Walker has been charged in court with sex offences involving children.

Mr Walker (59), who is originally from Killyleagh but now has an address in Blackpool, is facing two charges of attempted sexual communication with a child.

The offences are alleged to have been committed on dates between February 11 and February 21 this year.

Mr Walker, who was suspended from the DUP pending the outcome of the case, did not appear at Downpatrick Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

A police officer told the court he could connect Mr Walker with the charges.

Legal aid and bail were granted by District Judge Amanda Brady, who adjourned the case to November 3.
