Success for locals at championships

DOWNPATRICK and Bryansford students under the guidance of local martial arts instructor Joseph Ferris had considerable success in both the junior and senior British Savate Championships.

The Junior British Championships were held in St Patrick’s Hall in Bryansford on April 10. Out of the 13 categories contested, students from the Joseph Ferris academies in Bryansford and Downpatrick won a total of nine British titles. 

These were: U-7 boys, Noah McClean (BRY); U-9 boys, Finn Carling (DPK); U-11 boys, Rory Denvir (DPK); U-13 boys, Aaron Connor (BRY); U-15 boys, Oran Denvir (DPK); U-17 boys, Corey McCullough (DPK); U-7 girls, Rachel McCullough (BRY); U-9 girls, Lainey McPolin; U-13 girls, Chloe McPolin.

The president of the GBSF awarded the Phil Read trophy for fighter of the championships to Lainey McPolin (BRY).

The British Senior Championships and the Junior Brighton Open where held in Brighton on Saturday, April 23. 

Out of three Bryansford Academy competitors, Graham Ochiltree won the U-80kg category, Morgan Sandeman won the U-75kg event and Ian Miles came third in his category. 

Morgan Sandeman was named the winner of the Phil Read trophy for fighter of the tournament.

In the Junior Brighton Open, Mason Matheson won four golds, Blaine Matheson won three golds, Oran Denvir, Rory Denvir, Alfie Maitland-McCarthy won two golds, whilst Oran James Denvir and Corey McCullough won one gold and one silver.
