Student wins award for his robotics and reaches final

BALLYNAHINCH’S Joseph Armstrong was one of a number of South Eastern Regional College engineering students who won an award at the organisation’s first ever robotics competition held recently.

Students from the school of computing and engineering took part in the inter-campus event which was held in Bangor, with Joseph and Daniel Price qualifying for the so-called RoboCon final which takes places in May.

The inter-campus competition required participants to compete in teams of two to design and build a bespoke robot to autonomously complete a maze and move to an arena to throw ping-pong balls into targets.

The robots had to race to complete the task within a set period of time, with the fastest being announced as the winner. General engineering students Joseph and Daniel, who is from Bangor, emerged as champions, each winning a Wi-Fi fed flying drone.

Joseph and Daniel are now preparing for the final competition in May where they are hoping to defend their title with a faster, more accurate and entertaining robot to keep the record and continue to improve to be at the forefront of innovation and technology. The final will take place in front of friends, peers, parents and under the watchful eye of the judges.
