THE Crossgar Community Association held a successful open night last weekend.

The village’s War Memorial Hall was the venue for a reception for local business people and special guests last Friday night.

Association members detailed the projects they are working on to improve Crossgar, with the provision of a new cross-community sports facility topping their agenda. Guests were also addressed by Rowallane councillors Terry Andrews and Billy Walker.

Members of the Crossgar group would like to thank a number of people for helping make the village more pleasant as a result of a number of painted murals which have been erected.

Thanks have been extended to Mr. Gerry Rowan and students at St. Colmcille’s High School whose mural depicted the Olympics, while Killyleagh artist Leo Casement painted the Titanic on his mural.

Castlewellan man Tom Cunningham painted a mural featuring Amelia Earhart, while pupils at Cedar Integrated Primary, St. Joseph’s PS and Glasswater Primary painted a number of murals which have been erected on wooden hoarding at Downpatrick Street.

Association chairman, Mr. Paul Teggart, extended particular thanks to Nicola Magee and Paddy Smyth for organising the mural project which was sponsored by Down Council.

He also thanked all those involved with organising last Friday night’s event, including Briege Canavan and Sam Ferris and Cathrina Kelly of Wrap and Roll for providing the food. The flower arrangements were provided by Eden Flowers.

Also last weekend, community group member Andy Teggart displayed a beautiful horse and cart at the bridge in the village which has been donated to the people of Crossgar by the late Sean Casement’s family.

And Crossgar Community Association secretary Philip Irvine made a presentation on behalf of the group to Crossgar Youth League secretary Eddie Craig who has given 43 years’ service to young people in the village.

The Crossgar group’s next event will be held on August 4 in conjunction with the Crossgar Youth League Open Day. The Association’s next meeting takes place on Wednesday, July 25 at 7.30pm in the War Memorial Hall.
