SPA couple William and Tilly McCoubrey celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with Royal approval.
The couple were delighted to receive a card from the Queen to mark their diamond anniversary last Thursday.
They married on July 1, 1961, at Magherahamlet Parish Church and went on two have two sons, William and Brian.
Mr McCoubrey had just started his business, McCoubrey’s, in Ballynahinch, selling groceries, hardware, and electrical goods. The shop also incorporated a post office where he was postmaster for 25 years.
His sense of business and getting a great price for customers as he got involved with major European suppliers offering competitive prices, still available today at McCoubrey Electrical which is run by son William.
Brian is an aeronautical engineer with Bombardier Aerospace.
Mrs McCoubrey spent 35 years teaching, mainly at Spa Primary School, where she retired as vice-principal.
The couple have six grandchildren and two great grandchildren and hope to have a large family celebration when it is safe to do so.
They have enjoyed many exotic holidays during their marriage, visiting Hawaii and Thailand and cruising on the QE2 in the Caribbean.
