Sinn Fein elect three for Mournes district

20 February 2019

SINN Fein has confirmed the team it hopes can secure an additional seat in the Mournes area at the forthcoming

local government election.

The party has selected Leeanne McEvoy, from Burrenbridge, to run alongside sitting councillors Sean Doran and Willie Clarke.

The SDLP currently hold two of the seven seats in the Mournes area with the others in the possession of the DUP, UUP and an Independent Unionist.

With voters preparing for the May 2 election, Republicans are confident they can take three seats for the first time.

Sinn Fein has identified the Mournes area as an opportunity to gain an additional seat and says its three strong candidates represent a “dynamic mix of energy, experience and a determination to actively represent their local community”.

Mrs McEvoy said it was a “real honour” for her to be selected to represent Sinn Fein in the election and is excited about the opportunity to represent her local community and cannot wait to get started with the campaign.

“As a domiciliary care services manager I have seen first hand the real difference a strong Sinn Féin team locally can make for ordinary people and those in need,” she said.

“I am determined to bring my health care experiences into council in the future and champion the rights and needs of local people where it matters.”

South Down MP Chris Hazzard has welcomed the nomination of the trio for the Mournes area and pointed to what he described as the party’s “strong record of delivery across the constituency”.

He continued: “This is especially true in the Mournes where both Willie Clarke and Sean Doran have built solid reputations as fair, hard working community representatives, who have the ability and determination to deliver for all in our community.

“I am delighted to see Leeanne going forward for election and am confident that the three representatives will offer a successful mix of active, dynamic representation that the Mournes community deserve.”
