Shannon meets bank over Kircubbin branch closure

15 October 2014

STRANGFORD MP Jim Shannon has met with senior officials from Danske Bank to discuss the closure of its Kircubbin branch.
The MP said the meeting with Danske chief executive Simon Lyttle and deputy managing director Stephen Bloomfield was “positive” and while describing the decision to close the branch as “unfortunate,” he said there will be no job losses.
Mr. Shannon said a Danske banking service will be available at Kircubbin Post Office where cheques and money can be lodged or withdrawn. He said bank customers will also be able to access statements if desired.
“Danske has informed me there has been a reduction in the number of people using the Kircubbin branch over recent years, with many customers now using internet banking or the Post Office,” he said.
“This has led to a situation where the Kircubbin branch is not financially viable. However, Danske has assured me it will be doing all it can to help ensure a smooth transition for customers. Danske say the closure decision was a last resort.”
Mr. Shannon said Danske will be contacting its Kircubbin customers to explain what their options are, as well as providing helpful leaflets explaining how use internet or telephone banking.
The MP also revealed that during his discussions with bank officials they did not rule out the option of installing a cash machine in the village, even though they described such a move as “unlikely.”
