RTE broadcaster Joe Duffy to talk about life and faith
13 October 2021
AWARD-winning RTE broadcaster and author Joe Duffy is to talk about his
life and faith as part of the Autumn Lecture Series at The Saint Patrick Centre in Downpatrick.
The television and radio host of RTE’s Liveline and The Meaning of Life will be in conversation with
former UTV presenter Gerry Kelly, whose celebrity guests on The Kelly Show have included footballer George Best, country star Garth Brooks and James Bond star, Roger Moore.
Duffy – who describes himself as a Christian socialist – will also sign
copies of his latest book, Children of the Troubles, co-authored with Freya McClements.
“It’s going to be quite a chat with this highly successful RTE presenter,” said Dr Tim Campbell, director of The Saint Patrick Centre.
“Audience tickets are free and now available on a limited basis. This is the first of a series of talks we are holding and Joe’s appearance was delayed due to Covid and lockdown.
“It’s wonderful that he is coming and we are delighted that Downpatrick man Gerry Kelly – one of the most successful broadcasters in these islands – has agreed to present the evening.”
The event will take place on Thursday, October 21, at 7:30 pm in the Centre’s theatre.
Mr Duffy said that he was accustomed to asking the difficult questions in The Meaning of Life and that it’s “daunting” to be on the other side of the microphone.
“Being interviewed by the legendary Gerry Kelly is both an honour and nerve wracking,” he said.
Mr Duffy also said his book with Freya McClements has changed his outlook on life.
“Children of the Troubles had a profound and long lasting impact on me. Not a day goes by when I don’t think of all those who those died,” he said.
Lecture host Gerry Kelly said he was looking forward to the forthcoming interview.
“I’ve long been an admirer of Joe Duffy. His empathy, honesty and integrity are the hallmarks of his unique broadcasting career. His own personal story is also fascinating - all of which will make for an intriguing evening. I can’t wait to talk to Joe.”
The St Patrick Centre event is being supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs Reconciliation Fund and will follow all government Covid-19 guidelines, including the requirement to wear masks during the event.
The conversation will take place with a private audience at The Saint Patrick Centre with limited free tickets for
