Politician says he can bring new perspective to help around council

FORMER Ballynahinch Ulster Unionist councillor Walter Lyons believes he can bring a fresh perspective to Newry, Mourne and Down Council.

The former Down councillor has been chosen to contest a seat in Slieve Croob after the UUP’s former representative, Alan Lewis, defected to the DUP.

Mr Lyons, who served three terms on the former Down Council, is confident he can bring fresh thinking, combined with a wealth of experience, to the local authority as it begins a new four-year term.

“Given the current stalemate at Stormont having a significant impact on facilities and services, I believe it is more important than ever to take measures which will provide help and support and intend to be a voice which will make a positive difference to the lives of those in Slieve Croob,” he continued.

Mr Lyons is campaigning to reduce NHS inadequacies, highlighting the need for reduced waiting times for a range of health appointments.

“GP surgeries have also failed to grow with the population increase and longer life expectancy,” he said.

“I will promote local businesses as their success is vital to our economy and I believe in providing maximum support to our town centres and start-up businesses.”

Mr Lyons said that if elected, he will work tirelessly to support the community and highlight local issues.

He said his priorities include campaigning for better and accessible leisure, play and toilet facilities across Slieve Croob, addressing the neglected road network and lobby for traffic calming measures in affected areas.

Mr Lyons added: “I want to promote better services for rural dwellers, seek support for those dealing with Troubles-related trauma, particularly veterans and their families, and work with the local council to better promote the Slieve Croob area’s tourism potential.”
