YOUTHS setting off fireworks close to homes which border Downpatrick’s Dunleath Park have been condemned by local politicians for their “reckless and unacceptable behaviour”.
South Down MLA Cathy Mason and Cllr Oonagh Hanlon have condemned those responsible and called for the anti-social behaviour to stop.
They have both appealed to anyone who knows the identity of those involved to contact local police.
Mrs Mason said she shares the frustrations of the community about the ongoing issues at Dunleath Park and said Sinn Féin has been consistently engaging with partner organisations and residents, and will continue working to ensure this area is calm and peaceful.
"Dunleath Park is a valued, vibrant, and green space for families, sport, and leisure. We must protect it and ensure it remains safe for everyone,” she said.
Cllr Hanlon said she was aware of reports of groups of youths setting off fireworks in close proximity to homes, vehicles and park users.
She warned that not only is this dangerous, but is “deeply distressing” for residents, particularly those with young children, pets, or elderly family members.
Cllr Hanlon also confirmed she raised residents’ concerns at a recent meeting of the district’s Policing and Community Safety Partnership’s multi-agency meeting.
“It was agreed that an education session explaining the risks of fireworks and the distress they cause to residents and their pets will be organised locally,” she confirmed.
“This reckless and unacceptable behaviour needs to stop.”
