Planners give approval for Newcastle FC’s new home

12 May 2021

FORMAL planning approval has been issued by the Newry, Mourne and Down Council committee for Newcastle Football Club’s ambitious developments for the future.

The club’s proposed application for a totally new complex at Church Hill, off the Castlewellan Road, has now been given the green light in what will be a major move for the seaside team.

The priority for club officials is the development of three football playing fields, with a focus on a full sized grass pitch which will become the new home to the senior players.

An U-12 grass pitch is also in development, along with an artificial 3G surface also being put forward within the plans

Club officials share hopes of a multi-purpose sporting facility to be added in the future, so that the grounds are not restricted solely to soccer.

The application for the planning was officially approved last Thursday, with the proposal also entailing surrounding facilities to be added alongside the pitches.

Club officials are planning to build a clubhouse, changing facilities, car parking facilities as well as spectator seating, which depending on further easing of restrictions, they will be hoping to make full use of.

A new entrance has also been put forward to gain access to the facility, with fencing and gates in the works as well.

Despite the planning approval, there is no start date issued as of yet for the beginning of the project.
