Penny scoops top dog prize at Crufts

12 March 2025

A LOCAL woman and her dog have triumphed at Crufts.

Dr Carole Trueman from Tyrella and her dog Penny, a Bernese Mountain Dog, took part in the famous international dog show at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, on Sunday.

One year-old Penny, or ‘Windmill Penny of Tideinrella’ as she was known in the competition, won First Prize Junior Bitch for her breed, impressing the judges in various checks such as standing correctly and feeling correct for her breed.

It’s both Carole, a lecturer, and Penny’s first time at Crufts, after Penny qualified at the Belfast Championship Dog Show held last September.

“I used to show collies, but I loved the nature of Bernese Mountain Dogs,” she said. “I have two – Penny and Amber.

“Just to qualify for Crufts with Penny was great – we already felt like winners. Her first prize this year means she automatically qualifies for Crufts 2026.”
