Pegasus boxers succeed

IT was a busy week for boxers from Pegasus A.B.C who were competing in the Antrim Novice Championships at the Brook Leisure Centre in Belfast.

First up was 11 year-old Paul Gilgunn, who was boxing in the 50 kilos weight category against Eoin Keenan from Clonard A.B.C.

Paul forced a standing count in the first round to win the opener. In the second, Paul proved too strong and attacked relentlessly to force a stoppage a pick up his first title in a brilliant display.

Next in the ring representing Pegasus was 12 year-old Shea McConvey at 38 kilos, who boxed Andrew Snoddy from Midland’s A.B.C.

This was a cracking little battle over three torrid rounds but Shea lost out on points, despite clearly taking the last round.

Pegasus’ only female boxer, 11 year-old Jessica Flanagan, boxed Rathfriland boxer Elana Shephard. This was another thriller of a contest with all three rounds evenly matched.

However, once again the Pegasus boxer had to settle for runner-up.

Shea Fitzpatrick, a 17 year-old prospect, boxed at 67 kilos in a good scrap with St Agnes boxer Troy Sears in a semi-final contest.

Both boxers gave their all but this time it was Shea who won on points to move into the final where he would box D. Critchley from Canal A.B.C.

In what was a tough contest for both boxers, Shea certainly had his moments but narrowly came up short in the decision.

Fifteen year-old Aarin Rea also competed in the competition, at 48 kilos, boxing against Gleann A.B.C boxer T. McKee.

This contest was not for the faint hearted as both lads stood toe-to-toe for the entire bout. Teak tough Aarin lost by the narrowest of margins.

Corey McAviney was next out for the local club, boxing David Andrews from East Side A.B.C in the 46 kilo category.

It was a slow start from Corey in the first round but rounds two and three saw a determined McAviney who refused to back down.

A great contest won by the Pegasus boxer to pick up his first title.

Stylish switch hitter Luke Mullan (17) won the 54 kilo title to round off a great week of boxing for the Pegasus club.
