AN events space created at the rear of the Newcastle Centre has the potential to become a vibrant community hub for culture, creativity and tourism, a local councillor believes.
The space was created following the demolition of an extension to the Central Promenade building which Mournes councillor Willie Clarke is not being used enough.
He is calling for the revitalisation and increased community use of the area, highlighting its potential as a vibrant community space for a variety of events.
Cllr Clarke said the resort is “incredibly fortunate” to have a dedicated outdoor space right in the heart of Newcastle.
“With the stunning back of the Mournes and the sea just a stone’s throw away, this space is ideally placed to host a wide range of community, cultural and family-friendly events throughout the year,” he said.
Cllr Clarke said while the area has hosted some successful events in the past, “it remains an under-utilised asset” and is urging Newry, Mourne and Council, community groups,
businesses, and event organisers to work together to maximise the space whether for music, arts, food and craft markets, fitness classes, or youth activities.
"At a time when we’re trying to encourage footfall into the town centre, support local businesses and build stronger community connections, this space could be a real catalyst. Let's put it to good use and make it a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone,” he suggested.
And Cllr Clarke has requested that the council explore opportunities for improved infrastructure and promotional support to make the space more accessible and attractive to organisers.
He added: “Let’s reimagine this space not as a quiet corner behind the centre, but as a stage for the vibrancy, talent and community spirit that Newcastle has to offer.”
