O’Neill tops Captain’s Day board

10 July 2024

THE sun shone, the wind blew and the rain fell, but it did not deter 207 golfers attempting to win Brian Deeny’s Captain’s Day prize at Ardglass Golf Club on Saturday.

The course was in immaculate condition with greens running fast and true and it was going to take a good round of golf to prevail.

Terence O’Neill and David McMullan did just that with both recording 42points.

However, with ten points in the last three holes, Terence won with a better back nine and secured his first major prize at Ardglass.

In third place was Tommy Fegan Jr with a score of 41 points and Tommy will no doubt be regretting the double bogey on 16.

However, a round of 77 for the 12 handicapper was excellent scoring.

Fourth and fifth prizes went to Jackie Strain and Raymond Brown, respectively, on 40 pts, only separated after a complicated countback.

The first gross prize and best round of the day was from Jonny Feenan. The Senior Cowdy team captain went round the tricky conditions in 69 blows, securing the Gross prize from Daniel Vaughan courtesy of a better back nine.

Mr Brian Deeny’s guest prizes were won by his son-in-law, Ryan Murphy, and Kevin Beattie.

Longest drive at the 15th was won by Alex Simpson while nearest the pin at the par 3s were Eugene Quinn, Cormac O’Toole, Jim Greene, Colm Magee and Timmy Russell with Paul Fitzsimons nearest the pin in two at the 18th.

Thank you to Brian for the tremendous array of prizes.
