Nursing staff raise thousands for schoolboy

20 July 2022

NURSING staff at the Ulster Hospital recently took part in a sponsored coastal walk, raising an incredible £4,463 in support of Castlewellan schoolboy Cian Milligan.

Cian was involved in a horrific car accident whilst travelling to school in October 2020 and was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast with severe and life-changing injuries.

He spent a total of eight months in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children and was then admitted to a specialist brain injury rehabilitation centre in Tadworth in Surrey.  There, he received specialist treatment for a further six months, before returning home to Castlewellan.

The amazing amount of money raised by the staff from Ward 6C at the Ulster will contribute towards Cian’s rehabilitation, care and for specialist equipment to give as full and inclusive life as possible.

Staff Nurse Aileen Taylor, who organised the event, said she was “overwhelmed” by the effort and generosity of her amazing colleagues.

“I feel that when people hear Cain’s story, it is difficult not to imagine yourself in his family’s position,” she said.

“The team from Ward 6C were really keen to participate and help out in any way possible. From making teeshirts, arranging collections in their local areas, churches an within the Ulster Hospital. We are all so delighted to be able to help towards Cian’s journey home.”

The South Eastern Trust’s clinical coordinator, Richard Donovan, added: “This was an outstanding achievement from a very busy team who took time out of their schedules for an extremely worthwhile cause.
