Newcastle woman Kathy to meet Sir David Attenborough at event

10 November 2021

A NEWCASTLE woman will be rubbing shoulders with Sir David Attenborough at a virtual event which will explore ways of ensuring a better future.

Kathy Black is taking part in the Festival of Discovery, which begins tomorrow and ends on Saturday.

Also joining her in the event, which is being run by the Eden Project, will be comedian John Bishop, best-selling author Ben Miller and BBC gardening presenter Mark Lane.

Al of them will be taking part in inspiring sessions about eco-friendly initiatives taking place across the UK.

Kathy, who runs Unit T in Newcastle, will be sharing the story of how she and a team of volunteers responded to their local area’s needs by opening a sustainable community kitchen during the pandemic.

Built from re-purposed materials and located in the heart of the town, Unit T distributes home-grown produce, local goods and food near its sell-by date.

As well as providing a vital and sustainable service for the community, Unit T have inspired and involved young people to live within their means and connect with each other and the natural world.

The three-day Festival of Discovery is jam-packed with speakers, panels and workshops.

Tracey Robbins, Head of UK Delivery at Eden Project Communities, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be inviting Kathy to the Festival of Discovery.

“Here at Eden Project Communities, we know that there are thousands of amazing people doing their bit to protect the planet by joining forces with their communities and seeing the amazing things that can happen when we work together.

“We can’t wait to hear some of their stories and hope that everyone attending will come away feeling inspired and motivated to get together to protect our planet.”

The Festival of Discovery will take place online. Sessions are free and open to anyone via www.thefestivalofdiscovery.com.
