Newcastle roadworks for water pipe work

Newcastle roadworks for water pipe work

26 February 2025

A SECTION of Newcastle main street is to be closed for three weeks to allow contractors to install a storm water pipe which serves a new housing development.

Work on the Central Promenade project started yesterday with the new pipeline running from the recently built housing development across the busy main road to connect into an existing outfall pipe.

A new manhole will also be constructed.

The lane closure will extend from 133 to 149 Central Promenade and to manage vehicle flow, temporary traffic lights will be in place for the duration of the work and access to properties will be maintained.

Motorists – particularly those making their way to local schools – are being advised that they may need to allow extra time for their journeys. Schools in the area have been notified of the work.

NI Water’s project manager, Ivor Pollock, said the new pipeline will allow rain water from the new development at Central Promenade – which doesn’t require treatment – to be discharged directly into the adjacent sea outfall pipe.

“All the necessary approvals are in place for the work to be carried out and we expected our contractor CivCo to commence pipe-laying yesterday,” he said.

“To carry out the work as safely as possible, a lane closure will be required on Central Promenade

around the pipe-laying area for the duration of the works. Traffic lights will be in place to manage the flow of traffic.”

Mr Pollock said access to houses within any working area as well as the adjacent car park on Central Promenade will be maintained throughout the project.

“CivCo will liaise with any affected properties along the pipeline route with regards to access, parking, bin collections, deliveries etc and will ensure access is available to local bus stops. Pedestrian access will also be maintained throughout the duration of the works,” he confirmed.

Mr Pollock said NI Water and its project team from AtkinsRéalis and CivCo wish to thank residents, businesses and road users for their patience and cooperation while the essential work to serve a new development in Newcastle proceeds.

He added: “A letter has been carried out in the area and local schools notified of the lane closure. The project team will monitor the flow of traffic and strive to keep disruption to a minimum.”
