Newcastle AA meeting

Newcastle AA meeting

27 September 2023

ALCOHOLICS Anonymous will be holding an open public information meeting in the Burrendale Hotel, Newcastle, this Sunday at 8pm.

A representative from AA and a member of the medical profession will be in attendance and will be available to answer questions.

This meeting is designed to reach out to family, friends and professionals whose jobs brings them into contact with those suffering from alcoholism.

If you are concerned about your drinking or someone else’s drinking you are welcome to attend.

Alcoholics Anonymous began in 1935 when a New York stockbroker (Bill W) met an Akron physician (Dr Bob).

Both men had been diagnosed as terminally ill alcoholics and they found by sharing their experiences, strengths and hopes they created a spark which in time became Alcoholics Anonymous.

In 1946 an Irishman, Conor F, came back on holiday to Ireland. He hd been sober for three years sober and was determined to start a group in Ireland.

Consequently the first meeting was held in Dublin in November 1946. Other groups started up in Bundoran in April 1948 and Belfast in May 1948.

AA today has spread throughout Ireland with 13,000 members and 900 groups. There are 21 Groups in Co Down with 52 meetings being held each week.
