New playground opens at Downpatrick estate

A NEW £225,000 playground has been officially opened at the Meadowlands estate in Downpatrick.

Funding for the ultra-modern facility was provided by the Department of Communities and Newry, Mourne and Down Council.

The official opening ceremony was attended by the Department’s permanent secretary, Moira Doherty, and council chairman Charlie Casey.

Ms Doherty said she was delighted to attend the opening ceremony which boasts facilities for children of all abilities.

“The new facility is the culmination of a real team effort with many individuals and organisations in this area,” she continued. “Partnership working is vital to projects like this one come to fruition and I thank the council for all 

their hard work.”

Cllr Casey described the new play park as a “fantastic asset” to Downpatrick which was already being used extensively by the local community.

He continued: “The health and wellbeing of our young people is imperative and this new play park will help them enjoy physical exercise in a safe and friendly environment. It is an excellent example of what can be 

achieved through effective partnership working.”

Meadowlands Community Association chairman Danny Quinnis also delighted with the new facility for children in Meadowlands.

He added: “We have waited a very long time for this investment and I would like to sincerely thank the Department for Communities and Newry, Mourne and Down Council for all their work on this project.”
