SHRIGLEY has a new community association up and running.

Local woman Kathleen Stockton is the new chairperson of the village group, which has been reformed after several years.

The committee, which now meets monthly at the Bridge Centre in Killyleagh, consists of 10 members and two volunteers.

Mrs Stockton is a previous chairperson of the community group and says she has a clear vision for projects she would like to see be developed in the former mill village.

“We would like to do village clean-ups, and have a village mural put up,” she said.

“We would also like to see the Shrigley Bell – which is currently kept in the Sir Hans Sloane Centre in Killyleagh – brought back to Shrigley.”

The association also plan to have seasonal events for all members of the community.

“We are organising an Easter Egg hunt for local children and primary schools on Easter Saturday. We also plan to hold a Christmas event for senior citizens with the help of Down Community Collective,” Mrs Stockton added.

The formation of the group follows a highly successful year of celebration last year to mark the 200th anniversary of the village being established by John Martin in 1824.

A Killyleagh and Shrigley Community Connections website and directory will also be launching on April 26, consisting of information and contact details for over 70 community groups in the area.
