A NEW bus shelter is to be located at the Ballydugan Road on the outskirts of Downpatrick.
The news has been welcomed by local councillor, Conor Galbraith, who said the stopping point
will improve safety and accessibility for commuters, students and
older residents who rely on public transport.
He said residents along Ballydugan Road have been clear for some time that a formal stop is needed which will make a real difference for families on school runs, workers catching early services and anyone who has struggled without a safe, recognised place to board and get off buses.
Cllr Galbraith paid tribute to local people for raising the issue and to the relevant authorities for responding.
He also thanked local council and Translink officials for engaging constructively and moving the bus stop issue forward.
“Attention will now turn to securing infrastructure that protects passengers from the elements with the next step working with the local council and Translink to deliver a bus shelter at this location,” he said.
“A shelter would significantly enhance comfort and usability, particularly during winter months and encourage more people to choose the bus.”
Cllr Galbraith said good public transport connects people to jobs, education, health appointments and local shops.
