Mystery after explosives and ammunition found in Killough

9 July 2014

A SINN Fein councillor has said that the discovery of an explosive device in a residential area of Killough “beggars belief”.

The alarm was raised on the Rossglass Road shortly before 10am on Thursday by workmen who found the device and ammunition in a derelict house.

It is understood the house was part of the Shiels almshouses complex.

A number of elderly residents were among those evacuated from the area as Army Technical Officers were tasked to the scene.

Tests were carried out on the device and it was later declared viable. Police have said they believe it may have been in place for several years. It was removed for further examination.

The area reopened shortly before 8pm that evening.

“The reports I have received is that this was a viable device that could have maimed or killed someone if they had picked it up,” said councillor Eamon Mac Con Midhe.

“It beggars belief that someone would leave a pipe bomb in a residential area and it is fortunate that it was found and made safe.

“Those responsible need to consider the possible deadly consequences of their actions.”
