Mrs Prenter says farewell at end of 10 happy years

2 July 2025

THE principal of Our Lady and Saint Patrick Primary School in Downpatrick has retired after 10 years at the helm.

Mrs Simone Prenter joined the school as principal in September 2015, and was previously the principal of St Patrick’s Primary School in Legamaddy.

Both Mrs Prenter and her husband, Kieran have been dedicated to the education of young people throughout their careers .

While Mrs Prenter is departing after 36 years of teaching, Mr Prenter is retiring after 37 years at St Mary’s Primary School in Newcastle.

In the past decade Mrs Prenter has seen much change to the school, such as the addition of new learning support centres as well as the increase in enrolment of newcomer children.

“We welcome all abilities at the school,” she said. “We have children from the likes of Syria, Nigeria, Bulgaria, Romania and Lithuania. The school is a brilliant microcosm, the children learn from each other.”

There have also been hard times throughout Mrs Prenter’s tenure.

“During Covid it was difficult to have connections with the children. We stayed open and I went to work every day, it helped to have a rhythm during lockdown.

“The best part of the day is getting to connect with children and parents at the school gate and seeing how they are.”

Mrs Prenter said she could “write a book” about the school’s many achievements.

“There are achievements every day. From a shy pupil saying ‘Good morning’ to you or a child who doesn’t want to leave their parent being able to kiss them goodbye in the morning.”

Mrs Prenter thanked the school community for the past decade.

“I’ve been very fortunate to have great colleagues and have been able to seek advice from other local principals over the years,” she said.

“It’s been the privilege of my life, but everything has its season.”

Looking towards her retirement, Mrs Prenter said she would “see the world from a different perspective”.

“I’ll be able to decompress and unwind – I won’t miss the stress.”

The school organised a number of celebrations to mark Mrs Prenter’s departure, including a Masked Singer competition, a prayer service and a staff lunch with a special retirement cake baked by staff.

The current vice-principal at the school, Mr Martin Robinson, will be taking over the role as principal in September.

“I wish Martin every happiness and best wishes,” Mrs Prenter remarked.
