Menarys on the way in boost for Downpatrick

24 April 2024

MENARYS is coming to Downpatrick.

Trading since 1923, the company is taking over the Houstons store in Market Street which is one of five it has acquired across the province, with others in Banbridge, Enniskillen, Portadown and Lurgan.

All shops will be rebranded as Menarys which started as a local draper in Dungannon and is now a firm favourite for Northern Ireland shoppers over the years with 15 stores across the province, two stores in Republic of Ireland, with opening in England in November 2022.

Menarys was founded by Joseph Alexander, the great-uncle of current managing directors, Stephen and Philip McCammon.

Menarys managing director Stephen McCammon said the company was delighted to see these two historic family businesses coming together under the Menarys name.

“Both brands have been synonymous with quality product at fair prices and authentic, friendly service, and these values will continue,” he said.

“Menarys will rebrand Houstons stores in Lurgan, Portadown, Downpatrick, Banbridge and Enniskillen and look forward to welcoming the Houstons branch teams into the Menarys family.

“There are great similarities in the Houstons and Menarys businesses. It made perfect sense for the two businesses to work together to complete this deal.”

Mr McCammon added: “We hope we are able to successfully combine a little of what we believe Menarys are great at, with the existing strong Houstons product offering.”

The announcement has been welcomed by South Down Sinn Féin MLA Cathy Mason.

She said it was “good news” for the town and the surrounding areas and will provide job security for local staff.

“Menarys’ arrival demonstrates that Downpatrick is very much open for business and additional retail offerings will provide increased foot flow which will benefit the wider economy,” she added.
