Members of Downe u3a at international cuisine learning day

25 September 2024

DOWNE u3a members have learning about international cuisine.

Thanks to funding from the Good Relation Fund of Newry, Mourne and Down Council, Downe u3a members are discovering the food enjoyed by other communities in the area.

In the process learning about the places, customs and experiences of those who have come here.

A group of four Filipino ladies, led by Virginia Hughes, who lives in Newcastle, demonstrated recipes for several of their dishes, introducing the participants to ingredients not normally found in local kitchens.

The participants then tucked into the food and drinks provided, including the home-made crispy spring rolls which went down a treat with a choice of mango or coconut juices.

This event was also attended by four Ukrainian ladies who will arrange next month’s workshop, presenting their foods and showing a video about their country, while the third will showcase Syrian food.  These are being held in Owenbeg Bowling Club in Stream Street, Downpatrick.

Recognising that cooking and eating together is a great way to get to know people, Downe u3a has established two related interest groups.

First there is a culinary group organised by Pat Mulhall, where members share knowledge and skills about cooking and baking and have enjoyed visits to local culinary businesses.

Then members of the dining group, run by Pat’s husband, Brendan, have been enjoying monthly lunches and good craic, sometimes at Fodder, near Downpatrick, and sometimes at Montalto in Ballynahiinch.
