THERE was a huge turnout for Mr Denis McBrinn’s Captain’s Day at St Patrick’s Golf Club.

The weather held up and the captain’s regular playing partner, Micky Ward, was the first of more than 260 competitors to tee off.

The course was in excellent condition, but challenging with some tricky greens, and the temperature soared going into the afternoon.

The winner with 41 points was Alan McKelvey. In second place on 40 points was Ryan Murphy, while John Passmore was third with the same s score and Daniel Teggart was fourth with 39 points.

Conor Deegan won the gross with a 70, club president Noel Traynor won the council prize with 33 points, Paddy Totton was the best of the past captains with 34 points and Padraig O’Reilly won the seniors category with 37 points.

At the presentation on Saturday evening the captain expressed his sincere thanks to all those who had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the day such a success.

He thanked the course manager and his staff for having the course in superb condition with the greens playing wonderfully well. He said his theme had been “fun and friendship” and this had “far exceeded all his expectations”.

Captain’s Week kicked off the previous Monday when Mr McBrinn invited his friends and guests. The men’s winner was club secretary Joe Torney with a score of 43 and the winning lady was Sylvia Flynn, lady captain of Crossgar.

Lady members played for the Captain’s Prize on the Thursday with first prize going to Corriena Curran with a marvellous score of 48 points. The runner-up was Catherine Curran with another excellent score of 43 points.
