DRUMANESS Mills picked up another three invaluable points with an impressive home win over a good UUJ side.
The Mills started brightly and were ahead after just four minutes when Rory Mason floated over a free kick from the left and young Stefan Mason reacted brilliantly, with predatory instincts to steer the ball home from eight yards out.
The Mills went on the attack again shortly after with Stefan Mason looking to add to his tally, beating two defenders, but putting his shot into the side netting.
Philip Rogan then had a long range effort well saved by the ‘keeper, but O’Rawe, with his tenacious tackling and Rogan, were controlling the midfield and Rogan had a long range effort well saved by the ‘keeper. Stefan Mason was always a good outlet for their passing, and was a constant threat all afternoon. McEvoy and Rogan had efforts well saved and the Mills threatened the UUJ goal at will.
Midway through the half Stefan Mason had an effort tipped brilliantly over by the ‘keeper from 25 yards out. From the resultant corner the defence cleared the cross, but only as far as Philip Rogan on the edge of the box and his rocket of a shot found the far corner of the net.
The Mills midfield continued to dominate with Rogan, McEvoy and McQuoid all coming close to increasing the lead but the Mills ended the have with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half the tempo ped somewhat with the Mills lying deep and UUJ pressing higher up the pitch, but with no cutting edge. Ryan Campbell was forced into a magnificent save midway through the half to deny the UUJ centre forward.
The energetic Stefan Mason beat two defenders and had a strong shot well saved by the UUJ ‘keeper. Soon after, Campbell was called into action again, when UUJ’s centre forward met a cross with a good diving header, from Dan McAlea, but the ‘keeper pushed the ball round the post for a corner.
The remainder of the second half was controlled by the Mills with opportunities few and far between. Four minutes from the end a strong UUJ run from midfield resulted in Gary Murdock making a last ditch tackle in the box.
He was djudged to have fouled Dan McAlea and a penalty was awarded with Murdock lucky to escape with just a yellow. The penalty was calmly dispatched by Brian O’Neill and the remainder of the match was played out without any further incidents.
In all, a strong performance from the Mills who looked comfortable throughout and deserved their three points.
