Marathon man Leo aiming for 100 mark

1 July 2015

FORMER Downpatrick man Leo Lundy will join an elite running club at the end of the month.

That’s when Leo celebrates celebrates his 100th marathon in Courtmacsherry in West Cork. Leo, who moved to Dublin for work, only took up running at the age of 39 to get a little fitter.

His initial goal was to run a marathon before he was 40, but he was gone way past that now.

He duly completed his first marathon in April, 2004, when he competed in the May Marathon. Over the next 10 years Leo went on to run another 20 marathons in three continents and nine countries from Las Vegas in Nevada to the Gold Coast in Australia.

In 2013 another 19 marathons followed in his quest to reach 50 marathons before he was 50, which was achieved at a small event in Stratford Upon Avon. Leo then set about his new target of 100 marathons.

2014 was a prolific year with 38 events of marathon distance or longer including the prestigious Quad Dipsea Ultra marathon in San Francisco. Leo will add a further 22 marathons in 2015 to reach his 100 marathon milestone.

He will then become a full member of the 100 Marathon Club and be presented with a special medal and running vest to mark the milestone. This will be presented by US running legends Dick and Rick Hoyt from www.teamhoyt.com who will be attending the event.

Aside from the large city marathons like London, New York and Berlin, Leo has participated in the Belfast Marathon seven times and Dublin Marathon eight times, his favourite big city event, and has been meticulous in recording his exploits and travels in his popular running blog http://blog.leolundy.com. Leo will continue to complete in marathons and intends to concentrate on new events for him with a penchant for mountainous trail races.
