MLA calls for spruce-up work at Newcastle’s Island Park site

NEWCASTLE’S Islands Park requires a much-needed refresh, according to a local politician.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council has this week been urged to prioritise an improvement programme by South Down MLA Colin McGrath.

Describing the Islands Park as a real focal point in the resort, he said he is aware of efforts  over recent times to address some of the underlying issues, with the Shimna River flood alleviation scheme one of the success stories.

But Mr McGrath insists a number of issues remain outstanding.

“The public toilets are still closed and in need of a repair, while there are pathways that have yet to be resurfaced,” he explained.

“Lighting throughout the park is not adequate, while the entrance from Bryansford Avenue does nothing to attract people in and the play facilities are woefully out of date.”

The MLA said there is a need to be ambitious about areas such as Islands Park and for the necessary renovations and resurfacing to take place to encourage as many people as possible to be able to access the park.

“I am concerned particularly that we have no all access play facilities here and, when combined with footways that are now smooth and accessible, it would mean accessing the park via wheelchair would be difficult to navigate.

“We need the council to treat Islands Park as a priority if we want to encourage more people into the town.”
