MLA appeals for more street lights near village

18 October 2017

ROADS officials have been asked to extend a street lighting scheme in Drumaness to Corry’s Corner on the Newcastle Road.

The appeal has been issued by South Down MLA Colin McGrath and Slieve Croob councillor Mark Murnin.

Mr McGrath said with many pedestrians, including children, pensioners and others walking from the village to the bus stop at Corry’s Corner and with the approach of darker mornings and evenings, their safety is uppermost in many people’s minds.

“We need to be very conscious of pedestrian road safety at this location and I have called on the Department for Infrastructure to assess this particular area and provide much-needed lighting,” the MLA added.

Councillor Murnin said his predecessor, Anne McAleenan, fought long and hard for the bus shelter at Corry’s Corner and after protracted representations, secured it for the people of Drumaness.

He added: “What is now needed is associated services and I echo Mr McGrath’s call for street lighting from the village to Corry’s Corner. I have also requested to meet with the government department’s local street lighting engineer with a view to expediting this request.”
